ART MENTORSHIP IN HUDSON, NY
Wisdom sharing, creative vision, and deep technical critiques from an experienced artist — tailored to you.
Art mentoring is, above all, a sharing of wisdom from an experienced artist. It is a space to develop your creative vision, define your artistic identity, and build a long-term style that is unmistakably yours.
Whether you are just beginning or have been making work for years, these private 1:1 sessions meet you exactly where you are — and help you move forward with clarity and intention.
What we explore together
- What can we learn from master works and past works? We examine the decisions behind the work, not just the result.
- How do you develop and advance your own needs as an artist? Through new ideas, new techniques, and honest conversation, we build a practice that reflects your life experience and your voice.
how it works
- Tell me about your practice, your goals, and where you feel stuck. This helps me prepare a session that is truly tailored to you.
- Once I receive your questionnaire, we will coordinate a time for your 1-hour introductory session. This is a low-pressure way to see if we are a good fit.
- If you wish to continue, during your first 2-hour session we will outline a step-by-step program — an open-ended exploration of your work with the completion of a specific project encouraged.

Working with Lydia’s guidance has expanded my perception and understanding of obvious and hidden forms of shape, light, color and shadow values, and most important what seeks to be revealed in my creative artwork. A generous and wise teacher she is patient, honest and no nonsense. The depth of her visionary art work deeply touched and inspired me the moment my eyes first viewed some of her paintings. From that encounter I recognized that I wished to study with her. She has since become a mentor and a beloved friend.

For my painting studio work, I received valuable lessons in concepts and techniques of oil painting and water color, regarding format, composition and brushwork. She taught me as well how to research and generate new ideas for my work. Without a doubt, it was a remarkably valuable experience to have enjoyed the guidance of master artist Lydia Rubio in my teaching and artistic endeavors.

Lydia Rubio was my drawing and basic painting teacher at Parsons of New York City. I was immediately drawn by the title of the course “Visual Thinking”, those were my first experiments in painting. She was the best teacher of the year. I understood that lines could be paintings. I am forever grateful to Lydia for confirming that my mind was that of a visual thinker.

Having Lydia Rubio as a teacher in Parsons School of Design was at the time very inspiring. I loved the way she taught, her use of drawing to make us understand shapes and form. Still today I remember her incredible calligraphy, the sense of special space she has in every artwork she has developed.
